PCGH to Host “AHEC of a Summer” for the Thirteenth Year
Pointe Coupee General Hospital will host the “AHEC of a Summer” for the thirteenth year this summer. Area high school students interested in pursuing health care careers are given the opportunity to receive a first-hand introduction to various health occupations through the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program. These students observe health care professionals at work, participate in some of the health care professional’s job responsibilities, and receive CPR training. In addition the students visit area health care organizations such as the Pennington Research Center, Louisiana State Crime Lab, LSU Veterinary School, AASI Academy and are exposed to medical practices such as “ suturing, casting, dissection of cows’ eyes, heart, brain, and fetal pigs in the classroom setting.
Dania Tolliver, RN, BSN, coordinates this meaningful program at Pointe Coupee General Hospital in conjunction with CLAHEC representative Nan Ewing, Health Care Careers Director for CLAHEC and Joyce Landry, Assistant. The program this year will begin on June 2 and end on June 20th. Pointe Coupee General Hospital is proud of the fact that several of the former AHEC graduates have pursued heath care careers and are now working at this hospital.
