Family Practitioner
Dr. Robert “Bobby” Newton Helm was a family practice physician in New Roads for many years. In 1984, he was appointed Medical Director at Pointe Coupee Homebound Health and Hospice and continued in that capacity for 25 years.
Dr. Helm was born on March 18, 1926, in Patterson, LA. He spent his childhood in Eunice and Opelousas, before ultimately settling in New Roads where he spent his entire adult life. Dr. Helm and his wife of 67 years, Catherine Chadwick Helm, have five children: Corinne Ness, Chad Helm, Michael Helm, Suzanne Edwards, and William Helm.
As a family practice physician, Dr. Helm provided multiple and varied services including delivering approximately 2,500 babies. Additionally, he served as Parish Coroner from 1982 to 2005 and Chief of Staff at Pointe Coupee General Hospital. He also served as the Director of Pointe Coupee Homebound Health and Hospice and Medical Director of the Lakeview Manor Nursing Home, two positions he proudly held at the time of his death.
While Dr. Helm's awards are too numerous to list, he was most proud of being selected Rural Physician of the Year.
After Dr. Helm’s retirement from his private practice he continued to work as the medical director for Pointe Coupee Homebound Health and Hospice until his death on May 20, 2016.
